Time Less Images

If you don't like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes.

Even Mark Twain would find little to complain about the Boston area weather forecast for the next few days. It's a holiday weekend; Memorial Day is Monday. This is sort of the official summer kick off. However, a month ago I was in Saratoga, New York for Easter. All the bars and restaurants were booming, outdoor tables were a premium. Temperatures were in the 70's. We rode our bicycles with light jackets.

Weather like this could make people fearful that the doom and gloom Climatologists may be correct. As the ice melts in the polar seas, we may drown. But, we'll all be knocking on the pearly gates radiant with our "global warming" tans!

Much like George Carlin, all I can be sure of is: "Weather forecast for tonight: dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning."

Fortune has allowed me to come full circle and return to my earlier interest in photography. I am at that age were some weight loss would be beneficial. I certainly don't believe all photographers need to starve, but my initial goals are realistic, if not humble. The industry has changed tremendously, but the possibilities are unlimited. I am grateful that my parents' gave me a generic name. It's allowed me to explore numerous paths unhindered.

The Piscataqua River has one of swiftest currents in the country

The Piscataqua River has one of swiftest and most difficult currents in the country. Since the 1930s, this pier on Ceres Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, has been home to several 100-foot tugboat used today to bring tankers up the river at slack tide. Local river pilots are required to take the helm of the commercial vessels and guide them safely through the channel.

Moran Towing maintains at least three and often four tugs in Portsmouth to assist with river traffic that brings several million tons of cargo a year - coal, natural gas, road salt, and products for a Foreign Trade Zone - up the the Piscataqua River and through Portsmouth Harbor.

It can be a challenging job. While deep and ice-free, the Piscataqua is also the third-fastest tidal river in North America and extremely narrow by shipping standards. As a result, the tugs operate only at "slack tide," periods of about an hour twice a day when the incoming tide temporarily balances the outgoing current of the river.

Tourists travel about in packs or pairs, many with maps in hand.

In Holland, bikes are like bread and butter. Practical, efficient, economic (especially when it comes to parking) and often the quickest option getting from A to B, Dutch bikes are valued for function over form—which explains why the average Dutch bike is a battered, rust-laden creature. Cycling is by far the country’s most popular form of transportation. Its16.4 million inhabitants own 17 million bikes (in Amsterdam, that’s 800,000 bikes for 750,000 people) and an estimated 3.4 million people hop on daily for the commute.

In Amsterdam may be young or old. They may be fashionably dressed, dressed for business or casually attired. Many are locals going to or from work, shopping, visiting or taking the children and the dog out for a ride. Locals may have standard bicycles but many have jump seats for babies in front and back or baskets for children, dogs and/or packages. Tourists travel about in packs or pairs, many with maps in hand. They ride on brightly colored bicycles that advertise any of a number of businesses that rent bikes by the day or week.
