My neighbors are preparing for the invasion

I've been watching, and worrying. You may call me crazy, that's OK, I've been called worse. But pictures don't lie.

Over the last three months I've been able to put the pieces of the puzzle together. The mysterious, pounding noises at night, the strange grocery purchases, the weird dog...I'm pretty sure I know what's going on.

I knew that the large shopping bags did not contain lobsters. Who eats lobster on a cold day in spring?

Recently, after just shingling the house, I overheard him telling the roofers that he'll be calling them back again, soon. He said that he would be adding another floor. "You'll be too high, you will be breaking the building codes" said the foreman. "I have friends" was all the neighbor said.

I wasn't fooled, he needs room for the mother ship!

I have taken many digital images, but they all come out blank (probably too much radiation). However, I brought out my trusty Linhof Kardan Color camera and loaded it with High Speed Infrared (HSI) 4x5 sheet film. I set the camera up near a bird feeder to mask my intentions. It was hard, shooting moving targets with a manual view camera, and it was hot under the dark cloth waiting hours for someone to cross my path.

My chemicals were old, the film was very old. Actually everything had expired long ago, and the film had been exposed to extreme temperature variations over the years. I had also lost the instructions for developing the film.

The first picture may have been incorrectly developed, but the second is proof. That's no dog!

• And I'll get on my knees and pray
• We don't get fooled again
• Don't get fooled again No, no!

Of course, they could just like lobster, they may be expecting another child, and I'm possibly a lousy photographer.

Fortune has allowed me to come full circle and return to my earlier interest in photography. I am at that age were some weight loss would be beneficial. I certainly don't believe all photographers need to starve, but my initial goals are realistic, if not humble. The industry has changed tremendously, but the possibilities are unlimited. I am grateful that my parents' gave me a generic name. It's allowed me to explore numerous paths unhindered.

Now I know why I liked this man

Each night he slept on the floor. I suppose it was a type of self deprivation, a penance. As a product of the Catholic schools, I have vivid memories of all of the lessons of Lent. Us kids gave up little; if we had a nickel or a dime, we still bought our candy or comic books. Of course, only if we couldn't steal them. The good Sisters of Saint Joseph made sure that we at least did our small part, and herded us into the church once or twice a week to do the Stations of the Cross.

This man, Pope John Paul II was the real deal. He practiced self-restraint, abstinence. He was said to have spent entire nights lying with his arms outstretched on the bare floor. He fasted before ordaining priests or bishops. However, what made him real, the Pope of the average man, was that each morning he messed up his bed so no one knew.

As scientists begin to uncover the secrets of longevity, they are finding a prescription for long life that few will want to take: a diet so low in calories that to most Americans, it would feel close to starvation. The diet, dubbed "calorie restriction" in the clinical parlance of science, would be called severe deprivation in any other lexicon. Calorie restriction was first shown to create exceptionally long-lived rats in the 1930s. It later had the same effect in guppies, water fleas, yeast, spiders and a microscopic water invertebrate called the rotifer. Labrador retrievers became the first large mammals to join the list.

The experiments limit food intake to the minimum necessary to prevent negative effects on health -- or at least 30% less than the current "healthy" diet. Translated into human terms, that would be 1,120 calories a day for the average woman, or 1,540 for a man. For the average American, eating at that level would create deep hunger pangs. One meal at McDonald's -- a Big Mac, supersize fries, and small Coke -- weighs in at 1,450 calories. And if a woman on 30% calorie restriction had a cappuccino and a large muffin during her morning commute, she would already have consumed 75% of her allocation for the day.

That's a diet for a saint. I'll stick to my occasional junk food and three Our Fathers and three Hail Mary's once a year. I may not get a ticket on the express train to heaven, but I'll die fat and happy.

I like giblets but have never tried pig brain soup

I admit to watching the show where a guy travels around the world looking for interesting, or in some cases, weird things to eat. The other night he ate a piece of a sperm sac from a tuna, and nibbled on the jaw of a rabbit.

While in Peace Corps, I munched on fried ants, having consumed a lot of beer first. When my students ran out of the classroom to chase swarming termites, I tried to eat a few too!

I've eaten grubs from palm trees, but never knowingly. Too close to the worm family. The thought makes me gag now. Blood sausage does the same.

In my brother's house I am allowed to boil the turkey or chicken giblets to make a gravy stock, but I can't cut them up and add them to the final product. So I happily munch on a heart, liver or neck while finishing the dinner. When I was a kid we usually had calf's liver once a week. My brother admits to either feeding it to the dog or stuffing it in his pocket to dispose of later.

Pig brain soup wouldn't fly in this household. I noticed a lot of unique ethnic restaurants when I was cycling through town late fall. If the ice leaves the roads I may try one out for lunch. I'm sure I could find it on the menu somewhere.
