- Another turning point; a fork stuck in the road.
- Time grabs you by the wrist; directs you where to go.
- So make the best of this test and don't ask why.
Time grabs you by the wrist according to lyrics by Green Day in the song "Time Of Your Life". I've been grabbed by the wrist and bashed over the head my fair share of times. I've failed many a test. Years ago a drug riddled college professor, used to stop short, shake his head wildly during a lecture and state: "Burned out another brain cell". The occasional pauses, pauses without effect, during a conversation, remind me that I, too, have burned out a few brain cells over years of addiction.
A group of high school students were drinking beer on the Amtrak to Washington over the weekend. They were of the privileged class; they hated their architecture class; the people who interviewed them at Cornell, Yale and Harvard were all jerks; most complained that the after school activities were a waste of time. All these pearls of wisdom scattered around spilled beer, belches and burps. All very sophisticated and adult!
A young person, that I care for, repeatedly bemoans the fact that she can't meet the right guy. Now I believe that part of her problem is that her social life revolves around bars and clubs. Every retelling of a night's activity contains the word "shooters"; shooters as a noun, object and verb! I found an interesting reference: "They say the quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Well, drinking the recipes found here may just be the quickest way to see a man's stomach. These are designed for quick ingestion from those nasty little shooter glasses. Take care consuming too many drinks this way! A shooter, which is also referred to as a shot, is a small drink that is usually between one and four ounces. The diminutive beverage is designed to allow the drinker swiftly consume it. This type of drink is often associated with a celebration of some sort, a bet, a drinking game, etc."
David Sedaris in the story "Guy Walks Into A Bar Car" vividly portrays a life as a social drunk:
When Elaine states that most people, 40%, are "good looking" Jerry Seinfeld asks to prove his point: "Have you been to the motor vehicle bureau? It's like a leper colony down there.." When I am told that young people are living well, I tell them to visit a convenience store.
Overall convenience store industry profits rose 54 percent in 2008 to reach $5.2 billion. Once again, cigarettes dominated in-store sales, accounting for nearly one in every three dollars spent in stores. Nearly 75 percent of in-store sales were from the top five categories:
- Cigarettes (32.7 percent of in-store sales)
- Packaged beverages (14.1 percent)
- Foodservice (13.9 percent)
- Beer (10.2 percent)
- Other tobacco products (3.9 percent)
Nearly 70 percent of gross margin dollars were from the top five categories:
- Foodservice (23.9 percent of gross margin dollars)
- Packaged beverages (16.6 percent)
- Cigarettes (16.0 percent)
- Beer (6.9 percent)
- Candy (4.8 percent)
I was marinating like a cheap kebab for over twenty years, until I reached my destination. I didn't have the courage for suicide. The warm tones of strangers becoming friends, were memories. I had no friends. The crossed eyed mush that passes for alcoholic sincerity left no wisdom, no blueprint for change. I was lucky, I had family.
So take the photographs and still frames in your mind.
Hang it on a shelf In good health and good time.
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial.
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while.
It's something unpredictable but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
Andrew Thomas Gallo, the man charged with killing Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others in a car accident April 9, is an alcoholic, his family told ESPN.com. He remains in the Orange County jail, with bail set for $2 million.
"Time grabs you by the wrist"; directs you where to go. I hope you had the time of your life".
To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.
Lines Written in Early Spring William Wordsworth (1798)
One opens Warlock 5 to immediately see a stunning one-paneled page of a wizard calling forth to open a gateway. The wizard is a servant of the armored Lord Doomidor and the Lord and his minions go through the gateway into modern-day 1986 where they storm a subway towards a battle that could bring the entire grid right into Doomidor’s hands. The grid is a place that brings together several different realities and time periods into one place so the one who rules the grid could almost rule the entire universe.
Warlock 5 is still stunning, twenty years later, thanks to the artwork of Denis Beauvais. The stunning pencils and inks of Beauvais greatly bring this fantasy/sci-fi book to eerie life and the artwork in the book is a high point of independent books put out in the eighties.
