Earth Hour is about creating a global mandate for political leaders and companies to pursue progressive ways of doing business and start dealing with climate change in this most important of years. This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming.
The other part of Earth Hour is accountability: whether you are The City Of New York or a mutt like me. The way you approach your life and business—use lights less, turn off TVs and computers, recycle more often—makes a difference. The movement is not saying: “go and live in a cave and eat cold beans”.
Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007. It was an attempt to engage a broader Australian audience with the issue of climate change; not through the traditional form of a protest, but in a way that communicated the sense of a shared problem that needs a shared response.
The hope was that a few thousand people in Sydney would take part: At least 2 million did. Last year, 35 countries and 370 towns and cities joined in, 50 to 150 million people. This year, 2009, over 80 countries are participating and at least 1066 cities and towns.
Remember it is not called a “lights out” campaign. It is called Earth Hour. This is not someone at the center organizing cities around the world, it is cities coming together and deciding to act.
THIS SATURDAY 28 MARCH AT 8.30PM YOU CAN VOTE EARTH BY SWITCHING OFF YOUR LIGHTS FOR ONE HOUR - EARTH HOUR. Hopefully, tomorrow morning, there will be a run on candles in every Walmart. I plan to get there early.

Fortune has allowed me to come full circle and return to my earlier interest in photography. I am at that age were some weight loss would be beneficial. I certainly don't believe all photographers need to starve, but my initial goals are realistic, if not humble. The industry has changed tremendously, but the possibilities are unlimited. I am grateful that my parents' gave me a generic name. It's allowed me to explore numerous paths unhindered.
